So many of our Hope News readers are supporter of CFJ’s ongoing efforts to end domestic and sexual violence in our communities. With your help, there is always hope these cycles can end.
Yet here at CFJ we find ourselves more challenged than ever to meet the growing demand for services. Here’s what we’re facing:
- Our Kathie’s Place safe house has been filled beyond capacity with victims fleeing abusive relationships almost every day this year
- Recent cuts of more than 10 percent in state and federal monies to support services including Kathie’s Place, emergency hotlines and advocacy team.
- The current political climate and state-of-the-state almost certainly mean more cuts are on the horizon.
Meanwhile, our clients are arriving at our doors and calling our hotlines with an increasingly complex set of problems. They include:
- A fear of deportation if they report their abuse.
- A lack of affordable housing so they can live independently.
- A need for legal services as they seek the justice they deserve.
- A need for employment and self-sufficiency skills so they can rebuild their lives.
As an agency dedicated to restoring hope we are faced with a paradox: We may be forced to reduce staff and services at a time when they are needed most.
