CFJ is honored that award-winning broadcast journalist Tamron Hall will serve as keynote speaker for its 21st annual Speaking of Women luncheon to be held on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at The Waterview in Monroe.
Besides being a talented journalist and the first African-American woman to co-host the Today show, Tamron is an outspoken advocate on behalf of victims and survivors of domestic violence.
For Tamron, the issue is a deeply personal one. In 2004, her beloved older sister, Renata, was found bludgeoned to death and floating in the pool of her Houston home. Although Renata’s murder remains unsolved, Tamron has shared that her sister had a series of relationships with abusive men.
“No one deserves what happened to my sister,” Hall told People magazine in one of her first interviews about the tragedy. “For a long time, I was hesitant about sharing our story. I didn’t want to be another well-known person saying, “Look what happened to me and my family.” But then I said, screw that. I can save a life.”
Since first sharing her experiences, Tamron has gone on to use her public platform to empower and support other victims and survivors. She has partnered with the nonprofit Safe Horizon to promote its #PutaNailInIt campaign, which encourages supporters of domestic violence victims to wear purple nail polish during Domestic Violence Awareness Month as a show of empathy and solidarity. (Purple is the official color of domestic violence awareness.)
In 2016 she received the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award for her reporting on domestic abuse.
